Installing Dtella on Windows
- Download Dtella from http://umd.dtella.org
- Download a suitable DC++ client such as ApexDC++ or DC++ or BCDC++
- Install both Dtella and the DC++ client
- Start Dtella after installation is finished. Dtella will need to run in the background while you use your DC++ client.
- Start your DC++ client after you start Dtella running in the background.
- Use the following configuration to configure your client to connect to the Dtella network
| Server Name: | UMD Dtella |
| Server Address: | 127.0.0.1:7314 |
| Server Password: | <none> |
Remember: you will need to start Dtella running in the background on your computer every time after you reboot your computer in order to connect.
Also please note that 127.0.0.1:7314 is the server address for your connection, not YOUR IP address. That is completely different.
Notes
Firewall Configuration
If you have a firewall you must forward a UDP port and a TCP port to traverse a NAT firewall/router. The UDP port is how Dtella communicates with other nodes and is set using the!UDP <port>command in chat. The TCP port is used during file transfers and needs to be set in the dc++ settings. Make sure that the DC++ UDP port is not the same as the Dtella UDP port. You only need to forward the Dtella UDP and the DC++ TCP ports. If you need help on configuring a firewall follow the Firewall Setup Guide.
If your IP is "not authorized
This probably means you've downloaded the wrong version. Please end the version of Dtella that you're running, and then be sure to download the UMD-specific version at http://umd.dtella.org
Off-campus Students and UMD Wireless Users
If you are off campus, you can still connect to Dtella, but you'll need to use VPN to connect. Fortunately, OIT makes this fairly simple with preconfigured VPN clients. You can read about it and download them here: http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/topics/applications/vpn/3836/ Scroll to nearly the bottom to see links to download the VPN client for your operation system.
When you connect to VPN, make sure you connect to the network called UMD-Wireless, no matter where you are connecting from
If you are using wireless internet on campus, you will also need VPN to connect.
Clients
You must also install a suitable DC++ client for connecting to Dtella. DC++, StrongDC, and ApexDC++ are some available clients. The default install for either is sufficient, and specific setup instructions for both are below.
- Run your DC++ Client
- When prompted for connection and nickname info, fill in a nickname and leave the rest
- Click the gold start at the top, this will open your favorite hubs list
- Click New to create a new hub
- Name: UMD Dtella
Address: 127.0.0.1:7314 Description: UMD Dtella Nick: Your Nickname Password: (leave blank) Description: Click ok
- You'll see the newly created hub, check the box beside its name in order to have DC++ auto-connect
- To download on Dtella you must have something shared, to do this go to
File -> Settings -> Sharing Add / Choose appropriate folders to share
- Click OK
- In the favorite hubs window, choose Dtella and click connect
