Installing Dtella on a Mac
- You will need a DC client for Mac. The best client for Mac is Shakespeer.
- Acquire Dtella. Go to http://umd.dtella.org and download the latest DMG image. Copy Dtella DMG package to your applications folder.
- Double click on Dtella to start it. You will not see any application appear, but it is running in the background.
- Open your DC client and set it to connect to 127.0.0.1:7314.
- Add some files to your share.
Notes
Firewall Configuration
If you have a firewall you must forward a UDP port and a TCP port to traverse a NAT firewall/router. The UDP port is how Dtella communicates with other nodes and is set using the!UDP <port>command in chat. The TCP port is used during file transfers and needs to be set in the dc++ settings. Make sure that the DC++ UDP port is not the same as the Dtella UDP port. You only need to forward the Dtella UDP and the DC++ TCP ports. If you need help on configuring a firewall follow the Firewall Setup Guide.
Off-campus Students and UMD Wireless Users
If you are off campus, you can still connect to Dtella, but you'll need to use VPN to connect. Fortunately, OIT makes this fairly simple with preconfigured VPN clients. You can read about it and download them here. Scroll to nearly the bottom to see links to download the VPN client for your operation system.
When you connect to VPN, make sure you connect to the network called UMD-Wireless, no matter where you are connecting from
If you are using wireless internet on campus, you will also need VPN to connect.
Clients
As of now there are really only two viable options for clients, Shakespeer and valknut:
Shakespeer is the most useable client for Macs. It works well, quickly, and easily. The only problem with it is that it's missing many of the customizable features of fuller clients for other systems, however for most users, this is not an issue.
The other option, Valknut, is a port of a linux app. It has more features, but it runs sluggishly and sometimes unreliably. I would not recommend using Valknut except for diagnostic purposes.
Now, once you have Dtella running, open Shakespeer or Valknut. For both applications, make sure they are in Active mode, this is really important. The address for the server is 127.0.0.1:7314 . Just set your nickname.
If you use Shakespeer, after adding the Dtella server, go to Preferences, click Network, and enter a port. This can be any number greater than 1024. I usually use 2000. If you have a router, this will be the port you have to forward. If you don't have a router, you still need to enter a port. By default, shakespeer should pick a random port, so you may not need to worry about this step.
And that should be it, have fun with Dtella. The speed in the dorms is incredible you will download large files at speeds you never though possible, its pretty insane. If you have any problems use the online irc client to ask for help. Mention that you're from UMD.
